6-28-2011 update: we spoke with the new forest supervisor, Ed Armenta, and through his observations at motocross 2011 he thought that there really isn't a big interest in opening our track for public use.  It's seems the majority are content with the way things are...  comments below disagree.

Comments We've recieved:

"I am writing to express my concern about re-opening the motocross track in Mammoth.  It is a true travesty that the track was closed to open riding.  With all the recreation activities available in Mammoth, having the track open would help keep the town of Mammoth Lakes at the pinnacle of vacation spots.
Thanks for the consideration."

"Having motocross tracks open to the public gives young riders a place to go so they do not ride illegally. Riders in this area have to travel long distances to find an open tack for practice and to hone their riding skills. Charging a nominal fee would make this track self supporting and a bonus for the community."

"I vacation with my family in the Mammoth area regularly. Mammoth competes with many other places for my travel dollars and having the MX track open would encourage us to choose Mammoth over other locations."

"Please keep this track open to the public.  Our family has visited the track on a regular basis since early 2000.  It has become our vacation destination.

"I am a Mammoth home owner and enjoy all of the fantastic outdoor opportunities that are available. The motocross track being open for public use would be the crown jewel. I would fully support a pay to ride opportunity and back any effort for State OHV funding."

"The track would be a very good place to test for the upcoming National Motocross Championship for 2011. I think the factories would show up."

"The motocross track has been with Mammoth for forty-odd years. A connection between motorcycles and Mammoth date back at least to the presence of Dave McCoy in the Mammoth Lakes area, and probably precedes that period.
The motocross track should not continue as a museum property, to be locked away until its annual visitation; the track should be a public facility.
It must be remembered that public lands are not the property of their administrators, to be doled out as though from a meager private purse. Let's not forget the history of the track: free and open, with the approval and support of all the powers in the region. Let's not ignore the intention behind its' construction. Whose interests are being served by the current status? ...open it!"

"I support the opening of the motocross track. Not only does it provide a great place to have a great time, it brings families and friends together to support Mammoth and it's local businesses. For the motocross commumity, closing the track is akin to having the Mountain closed to skiing."

"Please re-open the Mammouth Motocross track for full-time public use. I, along with my family, would really enjoy a quality track, that would draw me to spend my hard-earned dollars in your neck of the woods, rather than spending them elsewhere."

"As a 2nd homeowner in Mammoth, having the Motocross track open during the summer months would increase the length and number of my visits to Mammoth during the summer. It gets hot in Southern California for track riders and having a beautiful, cool, world class summer track to ride would increase tourism. Many visitors who come to Mammoth during the winter don’t think about Mammoth for the summer and having an additional recreational activity would help the local economy. Furthermore, having a dedicated place to ride would help to reduce the impact on other riding areas and be the environmentally smart thing to do. Having a single place most rider’s would congregate would allow for educational opportunities to teach new visitors how to responsible use all the great trails and dirt roads currently open to off road vehicles."

"Mammoth Motocross track is a world renowned motocross track that many TAXPAYERS would love to have the opportunity to ride. Unfortunately, it is kept closed for unknown, illogical reasons. I for one being a Mammoth Lakes, CA home-owner would jump at the opportunity to ride the track and enjoy it's greatness.
The family opportunities of fathers, mothers, sons, & daughters spending a spectacular day of dirt bike riding at the Mammoth Motocross track is something that should be possible. These same families pay taxes that support the Forest Service...the same Forest Service that chooses to not serve ALL of the public and grant access to PUBLIC lands. Who's land is it anyway......if it is public?

"Open Mammoth Motocross track now for all OHV families that would love the opportunity to recreate legally and safely in Mammoth."

"I moved to Mammoth when I was 6 months old & for as long as I can remember I have ridden that track daily after school. I moved away from Mammoth when I was 14 but always returned to Mammoth to ride. I now have three boys who ride & want to share my memories with them & teach them the respect I was taught. The industry has many responsible riders & would love to support the opening of the track to the public again. Thank you for all your hard work."

"To who it may concern,
I would love to see the track open in Mammoth for recreational use . I am a 40 year old beginner to the joys of Motor cross riding and would be thrilled to have a place for my family to ride in Mammoth. Thanks for taking the time to work with the public on this topic."

"The Mammoth Motocross should be open for unrestricted public use. An open track would provide an additional reason to vacation in the area, bring along some friends and support the local economy."

Why do these uncivil "civil servants" not understand their existence - to help the public, not hinder them? Do they not understand the word "public" as opposed to "private"? This is not their land - it belongs to "all" of "we the people". Until "we the people" begin to collectively stand up for our God-given rights to freedom, these PC beaur-o-rats will continue to eat away at our freedoms until we are little more than slaves to their bloated salaries/pensions/interests/graft/kickbacks. People, be prepared to give up some of your "free time" to fight for your freedoms.
